The man behind Anglo German Racing

- is Darren Thrussell. Born in Leicester, England, Darren had an interest in horse racing from an early age, and living within a stones throw of the local racecourse at Oadby certainly helped! In 1989, Darren ventured into the world of racehorse ownership when joining the Racing Telegraph Racing Club, having shares in several horses trained by Mel Brittain, Karl Burke and Conrad Allen. During the 1990s, Darrens interest in racing continued, fulfilling a lifetime dream by attending both the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National meeting at Aintree. In early 2000, Darren moved to Stuttgart in south west Germany, and although the city does not have its own racecourse, Darren regularly found himself making the one hour train journey to the Baden-Baden course at Iffezheim. What he initially saw was something totally different from racing that he had experienced back home in the UK. 9 or even 10 flat race cards with a National Hunt race thrown in for good measure. Although returning back to the UK in 2002, Darren kept in touch with the German racing scene, and in 2006, he became the first ever Englishman to join the top racing syndicate in Germany, the Galopp Club Deutschland. Having previously had horses trained by Mario Hofer, Sascha Smrczek and Andreas Bolte, the syndicate currently have two horses in training with German champion trainer Christian von der Recke, based in Weilerswist near Cologne, and in 2007, Darren joined Christian working as an Owners Representative in the UK, whilst taking photos for the website both in the UK and in Germany. Christian regularly has runners in the UK, and is enormously successful with them. However, more often than not, the owners do not make the long trip over from Germany, so Darren steps in to represent them at the courses, including as representative for Stall Jenny, owner of Fiepes Shuffle, winner of a Grade 2 chase at Kempton Park in December 2008. Darren has also represented the trainer on one occasion, at Fakenham in May 2008 when Christian was at Baden-Baden. Unfortunately, the horse Darren was looking after ran loose in the parade ring and proceeded to destroy everything within 100 metres, before being withdrawn from the race. Not surprisingly, Christian has not left Darren on his own with a horse since!!

Darren can often be seen at racecourses both in the UK and in Germany, and is arguably more recognised at courses in Germany than in his native UK! He has also visited courses in France and Belgium, and although specialising in racing in Germany, has a reasonable knowledge of the horseracing scene in most of mainland Europe. Indeed, Darren was one of the first people outside Hungary to know of the ‘Budapest Bullet’, Overdose, as well as the ‘Greek Freak’, Ialysos. Darren also keeps tabs on German imported horses running in the UK, and information on those can be found in the ‘News’ section of the website in due course.

Darren will admit that his main love is steeplechasing, and although this is a dying art in Germany, there are some wonderful steeplechase courses in Germany, such as the lake race courses at Bad Harzburg, Hamburg and Quackenbrueck, and twisty figure of 8 tracks at Krefeld, Bremen and the wonderfully entertaining Mannheim course in the south west of the country. However, his favourite course remains Baden-Baden, with its amazing ‘Horizon-Bank’ and varied obstacles.

Please note – This is NOT a tipping or gambling service! Darren runs Anglo German Racing purely to inform people about racing in Germany. You will find no tips, steamers, or anything like that here!
