The Races & Racecourses

The German flat season revolves around an English style Classic set-up, with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas taking place early on in the season, the Derby and Oaks in high summer, and the St Leger towards the end of the season. The most prestigious race in Germany is however the Grosser Preis von Baden, run at Baden-Baden on the first Sunday in September, the last day of the ‘Grosse Woche’ (Great week) festival. This race often has international participation, with English trained horses having won the race 5 times since 2001. Away from Baden-Baden, top class Group races are held at many tracks, including Munich in the south, Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover in the north, Cologne, Duesseldorf, Frankfurt and Dortmund in the west, and Hoppegarten in the east. Although not quite of the same grade, there are several small courses in south west Germany such as Saarbruecken, Zweibruecken, Erbach, Lebach and Mannheim, which offer a great fun day out with horse races interspersed with pony and trotting races to create an enjoyable spectacle for all the family.
